I was snow flaky last week (lol)

My training update for this week is pretty sparse. 

With all the snow we got the second weekend in December this week we were faced with mounds of snow and ice piled all over our sidewalks where the roads were scrapped and of course trails and such were not scrapped at all. We also had reports of black ice through the first part of the week.

Due to that I did not get a run in at all until Friday. 

Kim and I ran a little over 3 miles and were so stir crazy we couldn't help the silliness that ensued as we ran through town!

Saturday I spent the day with my girls in Greensboro. We went to the see the Nutcracker Ballet and then ran a festive 5K later that evening. 

So last week was a 6 mile week lol but fun none the less!!

This week I have to pile on the miles to catch back up on my training plan! Luckily I have time built in to account for weather and other unforeseen conditions.

I am halfway through my 40th year and have established a strong relationship with distance running!

I ran my first marathon as a goal to accomplish "for my" 40th Birthday. I actually completed it in 

March of 2018. I turned 40 in June. So just to be sure that it counted I decided to do another (trail) marathon in October. While I’m at it why not add it another so I am running the Asheville Marathon again in March before I leave my 40th year. I sort of feel like I better do a 4th and can say I did 4 marathons for my 40th lol!

I am not a racer, I am a runner. To me there is a distinct difference. I do not like to push myself to the point of total demise. I am not the girl to empty the tank. I am reserved and like it that way. 

I do not enjoy the competitive feeling and thus I do not choose to compete. I love to run and want to be able to keep running for many many years. I can run a variety of paces and tend to match my stride to whomever I am running with. I love that! Running is my time I have to spend with the friends I love and I love that I we just all love running together!

I typically will run a 2:24-2:30 half marathon but you will for sure find (if you look) a 2:52 half from one of my all time favorite races. That is ok with me! I am proud of every race I do and ever pace I do because I CAN run.

I am a podcast junkie and listen to them every morning as I am getting ready for my day. On almost every running podcast at one time or another they have talked about hiring a running coach and always tout how much better, stronger, faster you will be by doing so. Hiring a coach can be super expensive but you can certainly find those that are very reasonable. I am not there yet. I am not sure if I ever will be. I don’t exactly love being told what to do lol!! What I do love about the idea of the coach is the wealth of knowledge and expertise that they can deliver.

Over 18 weeks I simply open the app, select the week and run I am on and see the workouts outlined for me. All of the workouts have tips. For example Week 2 has a 6-mile Run (easy pace) - Thursday. When I open the details I see “Run 6 miles at an easy, relaxed pace. Do 4-6 strides over the last mile. Strides are a 20-30 second burst at almost 100% of your full effort.”

WOAH!! I love this!! I honestly have NEVER done stride work before. 

While I don’t love being told what to do I DO love learning what to do and that is what this coaching plan feels like!

In the same week there is a run with Audio. How this works is for that long run I select the week, select the run and hit “Start Workout”. As I am running I will receive 3-7 messages that give me tips on training, nutrition, hydration and more as well as great little motivational messages to power me through. It is awesome!!

I always run my long runs with a friend and most of the time we talk the whole way, sometimes I crank up my music to help power me through a tough spot. Even with my music pumping the Motigo App breaks through the music to deliver the message. I do not miss a beat!

The greatest part is that you can use this plan as many times as you wish once you have purchased it. So I used it for my training for the Triple Lakes Trail Race and have started over now that I am training for the Asheville Marathon

Light the way - Nathan Luna Fire 250 RX Run Chest/Waist Light review

First of all I happen to love all things Nathan. I am a Nathan Junkie lol!! 

This said I was naturally super excited to get the chance to test out the Nathan's Luna Fire 250 RX Run Chest/Waist Light!

As you know I run typically very early in the mornings before the sun is up! It is always dark and so finding the best ways to light my path is important to me! 

The first run I did using the Luna Fire I used the waist strap that was included in the package. it worked out well for me. The strap is light and adjustable so it fit nicely and the light just hooks right on!

The light provided was ample. I was very happy with how well this worked for me!  It is a 250 Lumen LED spotlight and you can easily adjust the beam angle up and down however you like it!

The next run I used my light for was my long run. I am training now for the Backyard to Vineyard Challenge at the Asheville Marathon and so my long runs are already ramping up on Saturdays and Sundays. Because we are in the midst also of home reno I am needing to go even earlier so that I am home sooner to work!

The greatest thing ever about this light is that it clips on to almost anything and clipped on perfectly to my Nathan Hydration Pack for my long run. Once the sun came up I was able to easily turn my light off and stash it right in my front pocket of my vest. I absolutely love this!! Most other light devices are too large to do this! 

The other great thing about this light it that it's RECHARGEABLE!! Woot Woot! I just plug it in once a week, the night before my long run, and viola the next morning I am ready to go! I have no idea how long it holds, I have not had any issues with it loosing charge to know for sure.  
I have read that some people have complained about the light bouncing when they run... Seriously??? If you bounce when you run (and I bet you do) so will anything else that is attached to your body or that you hold for that matter. If you run when it's dark then you know, as I do, that what ever light you carry will bounce a bit. You light will match your stride! Maybe you just need to try not to bounce so much when you run lol! I did not have any issues with the way the light worked for me at all!!

Having light for your runs, or even your walks, is super important. Not only does it make your ability to see better but it also makes it so that other travelers (especially cars) are able to see you!

The hustle and bustle is in full effect!

Whew… It has been a month….

Life is a little flipped upside down at the moment. 

We have planned for the last 5 years or so to do some remodeling at our house and at the moment we are in full on reno mode. Yes in the middle of the busiest season...

 Over my 40th Birthday weekend we painted the exterior of our house and while there are a few other things outside we plan to do we have moved inside for the winter.

Well we kinda moved out…

We actually moved into our downstairs which is an efficiency apartment type space with a kitchenette, living area, bathroom and bedroom. With the girls off at college this was the best time to do this. This allowed us to empty the upstairs and do the work without obstruction. With our upstairs completely empty we have been able to replace the flooring in our kitchen and den and we are now in the stages of refinishing all of the floors upstairs and painting the entire interior. We will then install new kitchen cabinets that my husband is building. We are so excited!

In addition to this we have celebrated Thanksgiving with our families, I directed the Night of Light 5K, St. Nick came to visit, we are trying to get ready for Christmas as best we can and I have officially began training for the Asheville Marathon Backyard to Vineyard Challenge.

I will run the half marathon on March 16th and the marathon on March 17th!

Yes it is possible I have lost my mind!! 

I will be logging more miles than I have before to accomplish this but really I will only add one long run into the mix of the runs I already do. 

Because of my schedule I plan to run my longest run still on Saturday’s and run the shorter long run on Sunday’s. This will be the opposite of how the race will occur but regardless I will get in all the miles and I will be running on tired legs. Sounds super fun I know ha ha!

I also have committed to pace the half marathon with a friend so I will run the half marathon at my usual running pace and will not race it. I actually wont race the marathon either, I am not really a racer at all, but I would love to better my time from last year of course so we will see. 

My biggest worry is injury and so I plan to really work on core strength and stretching!  

My current training plan is an adaptation of the Goofy Challenge Training Plan from Hal Higdon:

Monday - 3 mile walk/rest day - I have  step goal that I try to meet each day so this is my way of ensuring I get in those steps. We take our pups and have a great time exploring the town.

Tuesday - 3 mile loop run 

Wednesday - 3 mile hill and speed run

Thursday - 4 mile hill and interval run

Friday - 3 mile run

Saturday - Each week I will add a mile (14-20 miles) with a few cut back weeks (9 miles) and a couple weeks that mileage will repeat. This will be my longest running day.

Sunday - Each week I will add a mile (6-12 miles)

Right now I plan to run using a 3:1 run:walk method. I may run half of the mileage non stop and then run the 3:1 for the second half of the run. I will run based on feel and it will just depend how we feel week to week. 

My legs are already tired lol!

This week we have had a major snow storm in North Carolina and so that has put a damper already on this week. We ran 13 miles on Saturday but did not get to run Sunday, walk Monday nor did I run this morning. We did get in some fun play time!!

My plan is to recap the training each week as I move through this process. I fully expect to have some more epic runs to share! I have already found some new trails to run and can't wait to try them out!! Stay tuned!
