The dark days of running

My running routine has been a little slack these last two months! I have been a busy busy bee and the days are quite short...

We have been working on college applications for Tess; all early applications were due in October. That is like a full time second job. She would be on one computer and me on another working to input the same information over and over again. 

We had lots of family fun at Thanksgiving. 

We have also been busy gearing up for Christmas. 

Tess’s school football team had a great season and went to the playoffs so we had a few more games than expected and no break between football and basketball season. Basketball season is in full swing now already. That is two to three games a week!

My Run for God Group has been going so well and we just ran our 5K on Saturday night!

Did I mention I was also Race Director for that race, the Night of Light 5K, that was held this past Saturday! It was a great event!! So much festive holiday fun!!! We had a great time!!

It has been a whirlwind!

Aside from running with my group training for the 5K I have not been getting out and running as I would like. 

I think these dark days are getting to me! I am not seeing much sun these days since daylight savings time ended! I am at work as the sun comes up and I leave work as the sun is going down. I am feeling a bit tired and lazy and it basically looks like bedtime by the time I am home each evening. On top of that it’s getting colder. I am not surprised that so many people suffer from SAD, Seasonal Affect Disorder, this change is taking me some getting use to this year. We have also had some serious wildfires just down the road from us and our air quality has been seriously impacted. 

In October I got in 74 miles and in November 29 miles. This gives me 698 miles for the year so far with one month to go.

 I look forward to what December holds! I am going to push my self out the door this month and finish the year strong!

September miles

September was a busy month. I am almost a month late posting my training update. We had a lot going on around here and I had some minor surgery which set me back a bit in my running. 

Running has become such a part of who I am that I “need” a run or I feel off my game so to speak during the day. The morning of my surgery since I didn’t have to be to the hospital until 10:00 am I decided to head out with my friends for our regular 5am meeting. Now I didn’t exactly run. I was worried I would be thirsty for water if I did I couldn’t eat or drink before surgery so we walked instead. That same morning one of our other friends joined us and she had just had eye surgery two days prior. Runners are committed man!! LOL!

All this said I did manage to get in 63 miles. At the end of September I was at 594 miles in for the year! I am pretty happy about that! While I didn’t meet the schedule I needed to get to 1,000 miles by the end of the year I am already working on my plans for next year. I think I will set a monthly mileage and race goal and see where it gets me! October has been fun and I am enjoying running in the cooler temps! I will be postign my October miles soon!

She has a royal heart

As I mentioned earlier this week, fall is in full swing around here. 

It is the season of Friday Night Football and all sorts of fall festivities.

One of these is High School Homecoming. 

My daughter Tess is a high school senior and her senior class mates voted her and eleven other lovely young ladies onto the 2016 Homecoming Court. She was so excited! What a huge honor to be considered for this. 

All of the events leading up to the homecoming game were so much fun! 

There were pictures at the local photography studio. Tess wore a dress that belonged to my mom in the 70’s and pearls that were my Nana’s from the 40’s for her pictures. She was beautiful!

They had a downtown, small town parade that was attended by family and friends.


Sprit week was the week before the game and Tess had the most fun getting creative with her outfits. 

Monday was Merica Monday. Here is Lady Liberty!

Tuesday was Dynamic Duo Day and she and a friend were “Netflix and Chill". 

They had Wild Wednesday and Tess dressed for the Wild Wild West!

Thursday was Hip Hop Hippies and Historians. Tess chose Hippie and couldn’t even count how many hugs she gave out freely!

Finally there was Frat Friday!!

So much fun!

Going into Friday night, the night the Homecoming Queen would be crowned, Tess was a little nervous. Getting dressed and walking out onto the field in front of hundreds of spectators will do that. 

She was also so excited. Again, what a huge honor to be a representative on this court. She felt blessed to be among all these other amazing girls that are also her very dear friends. 

I was nervous and excited for her and all these girls! The game was a great game and at half time the girls lined up. I had Madie video on my phone while I took pictures and I am so glad I did! They announced the Maid of Honor and then a slight pause. Your Patton High School 2016 Homecoming Queen is…. Tess Causby!! 

Oh. My. Gosh. I could not be more proud! I almost cannot articulate exactly how I feel. This little girl of mine has always, always, always, had a heart bigger than the world and how she fits it in her tiny body I have no idea. She loves all people unconditionally, treats everyone with such respect and as though they are her favorite person in the world. 

When I asked her later that evening how she felt she said “I feel blessed.”

“What’s even better”, I said, “is that this shows what a blessing you have actually been to others”. The fact that her entire student body, ninth – twelfth graders, selected her as their home coming queen makes me know that she is so loved and I believe she is so loved because she so loves them! I am so proud of her and so happy for her.

There is nothing quite like the experience of seeing your little girl so happy and proud of herself. 

Yes she is beautiful, but this is not a contest of outward beauty, rather it is one of the beauty within she certainly does have a royal heart made of pure gold.

Couch to 5K to Half Marathon Week 4, 5 and now 6!

Good grief the time is passing so quickly around here! Fall is in the air and as quickly as the leaves blow around in the slight chill of the breezes that blow so do the days blur by. The hustle and bustle of the season is upon us. We have football season in full swing and homecoming so the past several weeks have been all consuming. 

All that said, I wouldn’t trade any of it for a thing!

In amongst all the other things going on our training has not slacked off at all! I am a little behind in sharing the training plans so let me catch you all up!

We had a great Week 4 Group Run followed by some great nutrition talk with one of my dear friends.

Week 4 workouts:

Start with a brisk 5-minute warm-up walk. Jog 90 Seconds, Walk 90 Seconds Jog 3 Minutes, Walk 3 Minutes Jog 90 Seconds, Walk 90 Seconds Jog 3 Minutes, Walk 3 Minutes Total Workout = 28 Minutes

Week 5’s workout wass a little longer with longer segments of jogging. Make sure you get in all three workouts if possible each week this will help increase endurance as we progress further into the program! Don't get discouraged if you have a bad run or a tough time, even the most experienced runner will have a tough run from time to time. It will get harder before it gets easier but eventually it will be easier. Keep Going! Don't Stop! You've got this!!

We talked about stretching and paying attention on our runs to look for God and to recognize God Moments. We also got our Run for God T-Shirts and we are excited to begin wearing them for our training runs!

Week 5 workouts:

Workout #1, #2, & #3 Start with a brisk 5-minute warm-up walk. Jog 3 Minutes, Walk 90 Seconds Jog 5 Minutes, Walk 2 Minutes Jog 3 Minutes, Walk 90 Seconds Jog 5 Minutes, Walk 3 Minutes Total Workout = 34 Minutes

This week we will be in week 6 of the couch to 5K portion of this training plan. We will talk about the common weight loss misconceptions and we plan to walk our new race route to get familiar with it. 

Week 6 will also have three workouts:

Start with a brisk 5-minute warm-up walk.
Jog 3 Minutes, Walk 90 Seconds
Jog 5 Minutes, Walk 2 Minutes
Jog 3 Minutes, Walk 90 Seconds
Jog 5 Minutes, Walk 3 Minutes
Total Workout = 34 Minutes

We are really enjoying this journey together. It is so fun to train together and encourage one another.

Couch to 5K to Half Marathon Week 3

Week 3 of Run for God Couch to 5K came and went! Whew! This program is flying by!

We were a little worried about the weather, it looked like rain, the radar showed storms.

The skies held long enough for us to knock out our group run!

This week we talked about Injuries and Injury prevention and that is so so important as you are starting your training plan. We had a special guest speaker from our local hospital to talk with our group and he was a wealth of information!

The running plan for week three is as follows:
Start with a brisk 5-minute warm-up walk. Then alternate 90 seconds of jogging and 2 minutes of walking for 20 minutes. Follow that with a 5-minute cool-down walk.
Total Workout = 30 Minutes

Week 3 will finish up on Sunday 10/2/16 and we will move right into week 4!

High Five For Friday 09/30/16

Is it really Friday already! This week has been a fast week for me so there was a lot crammed in and I didn’t get in any real updates this week. Here are my highlights of the week:

1. First and foremost my little buddy Sam Rosebrock who has been battling Neuroblastoma since 2012 and yesterday after a long day of scans they received the news that he is one year CANCER FREE!!!! Sam has been through so so much in his little life and my prayer for him is that he continues to live a long, healthy and happy life with no more cancer ever!

2. We joined Team Sam and ran the Isabella Santos Foundation 5K/10K for Kids Cancer. My friend Elizabeth and I ran the 10K (which was our very first 10K event) and Tess did the 5K with Sam and crew! It was such a fun, yet emotional, event.

3. My little baby girl got her first official acceptance letter for College, she is so excited! (My big Madie is doing great as well in her second year of college!)

4. I had a super fun Salad in a Jar Party at our local Food Matters Market! There were about ten of us and we all brought some goodies and made these delicious salads. I have eaten them for lunch each day this week.

5. I had a little surgery on Thursday and I was ridiculously nervous about it. I had an amazing team at the Hospital; I received exceptional care and had so many friends and family checking on me throughout the day. I feel so well taken care of and so loved! My furbabies didn't leave my side all night either. 

This weekend will be an easy relaxing weekend and I will be back to my regular schedule hopefully next week! Have a wonderful weekend my friends!!!

Couch to 5K to Half Marathon Week 2

We are in Week #2 of our 12 Week Couch to 5K plan. We are having so much fun!!

Week one of the Run For God Program talks a lot about shoes and making sure you have the proper size and fit. The best thing to do is find a specialty shoe store somewhere nearby and go an actually get fitted for shoes. You don’t have to buy your shoe there but it is great to find out what type of shoe you should be wearing and if you are at all like me you may also find out you are wearing the wrong size. I have a narrow foot and so I was wearing a shoe an entire size too small to keep the heel from slipping. What I needed was a narrow shoe in the proper size! I was actually having some early foot pain as a result of improperly sized shoes. I am so glad I figured that out! 

Week two we talk gear. Of course running is reported to be one of the cheapest sports, all you need is an able body and a pair of shoes right? Right! Just one thing though, us runners can quickly turn in to gear junkies! Week two we talk about all the fun gear that is out there! You can check some of mine out here and I have so much more that I have yet to write about lol!

This week our training plan is as follows. 

 Workout #1, #2, & #3 
Start with a brisk 5-minute warm-up walk. Then alternate 90 seconds of jogging and 2 minutes of walking for 20 minutes. Follow that with a 5-minute cool-down walk. Total Workout = 30 Minutes

We got in workout one on Monday and will do workout two at some point this week and work out three this weekend!

Country Road Take Me Home

It was an absolutely beautiful weekend this past weekend. The weather here in North Carolina is sitting on the edge of summer and fall so it’s really nice out, still warm but not ridiculous. The leaves are just starting to fall and so it’s also so pretty out!

Saturday Morning I enjoyed an early two mile run with my Run For God Runners! So much fun and the temperature was perfect!

We attended a Celebration of Life for a very dear family member on Saturday afternoon. It was held deep in the South Mountains at a little old church way back in the woods. The service was beautiful; there was a very touching military honor; perfect words and prayer spoken by another family member and fellowship, storytelling and amazing food with precious family. 

We took some time before the service to visit one of our favorite spots, the Pots. It is so peaceful there and these pots amaze me every time I see them. I wonder how long it has taken to carve out these perfect circles in the stone to create these “pots”. I imagine my Nana Smith finding this place as a young girl and swimming here. I wonder how far they walked to get here. 

Saturday evening we celebrated my uncles 60th Birthday with the other side of my family in town.

Sunday morning I met my running buddies for a fun six miler on the local greenway!

I love weekends like this. Friends + Family + Time Outside = One Happy Girl
