Sitting Bear, NC

We enjoyed a great hike on Sitting Bear Mountain this past Sunday!

The scenery was amazing and there were so many breathtaking views along the way!

Sitting Bear is located along the eastern rim of the Linville Gorge in Burke County, NC and is part of the Pisgah National Forest. The trail was very steep in sections but it was a great hike!

The panoramic view of the gorge at the top is well worth the climb up! Wow!

We found lots of great backpacking sites as well along the way.

The campsites along the way are primitive with only a fire ring to indicate that they are a campsite. The area is very well taken care of by the visitors. Aside from the fire ring there is no trace of camping at several of these sites (one however was occupied). There were no obvious water sources near these sites so you would need to be prepared to carry your water in. There was a shallow stream at the head of the trail near the main road but in dryer months this would likely not supply ample water.

The fist campsite is an easy, short hike in.

The second campsite is just a little farther up the trail and offers a large flat area for multiple tents!

The third site is farther up the trail and might be a great spot for a hammock camper but there are not any real great flat spots for a tent. The rock however is AMAZING!

The fourth site is at the highest elevation on the trail and boasts the best views! The site offers little coverage from the elements and requires quite a climb to get there.

Access to Sitting Bear can be found by taking Hwy 181 to Gingercake Raod. Follow the road to the left through Gingercake Acres. Once the road becomes gravel you will travel approximately 2 more miles and you will see the trail head on the right. Parking is limited.

Camping does require a permit on the weekends and holidays from May 1 - October 31. Permits can be obtained through Grandfather Range District, 109 East Lawing Drive, Nebo, NC 28761 or call (828) 652-4841.

Take a peak at our new Map page to see Sitting Bear and all the other places we have referenced on our map! We will add to it along the way!
